Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), Freeze-Dried Herb, certified organic fruit 300 mg. per cap, 50 vegicaps $10.50 For more than 100 years cranberries have been known to be useful for urinary tract infections. For the American Pioneers discovering a bog of cranberries was reason to rejoice. The berries could be dried and being high in vitamin C could prevent scurvy in the winter, and they were used as a diuretic. As far back as the middle of the 1800's German doctors noted the value of the cranberry for urinary tract infections. Cranberry has been shown experimentally to increase acidity of urine. Cranberries not only acidify urine, but also have a chemical polymer that interferes with the ability of bacteria to stick to the lining of the urinary tract. The bacteria losing their footing are flushed out in the urine before they can set up house and cause an infection. Another study in 1994 confirmed the value of cranberry in reducing bacteria and infection in an elderly population. In yet another study cranberry was stronger in preventing a urinary tract infection than curing one. |
